The International Grey to Green Movement

Transitioning from Hardscapes to Greenscapes

Cities are the driving forces of modern life. By 2050 as much as two-thirds of the global population will be urban. Green spaces are an essential part of any city, for biodiversity as well as mental and physical health. Research shows cities are especially vulnerable to climate change.

New York has recognized rising temperatures and sea levels are not the only threats to its long-term future, so it is working in parallel to address the social inequality that limits access to economic opportunity for some of its citizens. This can be achieved in many ways, an example is the movement in cities to transform otherwise unused land into vibrant community gardens and urban farms.

Atlanta's First Community Urban Food Forest at Brown Mills provides a prime example! This site is Atlanta's first Community Urban Food Forest, as well as a new model for a City of Atlanta park. The food forest will produce a wide variety of fresh, flavorful, and healthy nuts, fruits,  vegetables, herbs,  and mushrooms, which will become available for public consumption. Creating revenue generating, community building sustainable use of previously abandoned and under-utilized land.

Grey to Green NYC aims to promote similar sustainable urban land use initiatives and conservation values to empower community members, engage stakeholders and create on-going environmental, ecological and social change in their communities throughout New York City!
